When We Aren’t Lifting Tons of Machinery, We’re Working on Our Swing!
This year, the Hartlepool branch of the Green Howards and Royal Yorkshire Regiment proudly held its annual charity golf day at the picturesque High Throston Golf Course. It was a day filled with camaraderie, competition, and a shared commitment to supporting those in need. The event was attended by veterans of all Services and different regiments.
Paul Muir, Senior Contracts Manager at VIG, and Royal Navy veteran, who is also a member of the Hartlepool branch, expressed his thoughts on the day.
“As a veteran, it was a privilege to participate in an event that not only brings our community together but also raises vital funds for local and veterans’ charities. We were fortunate to have VIG as our sponsor, generously contributing towards the event. In their honour, we competed for the VIG Charity Shield, with two categories: one for golfers with handicaps between 0-16 and another for those with handicaps between 17-18. The competition was fierce but friendly, with all participants striving to win the coveted shield.
The funds raised from this golf day, along with those from our upcoming Remembrance event in November, will go to support local and veterans’ charities. Last year, thanks to the dedication of our members and the generosity of our supporters, we raised £2,000 after costs. Beneficiaries included BLESMA (British Limbless Ex-Servicemen’s Association) and Alice House Hospice, a local charity close to our hearts.
This year, after accounting for costs, we estimate that the golf tournament alone has raised around £1,000. The exact charities that will benefit from this year’s efforts will be decided by a vote following our Remembrance event in November. Our focus remains steadfast on supporting veterans’ organisations and local causes that make a real difference in our community.
With 40 golfers participating this year, the tournament is growing into an annual tradition that not only fosters camaraderie but also reflects the spirit of service that defines the Green Howards and Royal Yorkshire Regiment. Next year, the event will be featured on the Green Howards golf calendar, and we’re optimistic that this will lead to even greater participation.
